FRESH PERSPECTIVES
SEASON 2024, EPISODE #218
Mayville Tree Advisory Committee

Mayor's Arbor Day Speech

Good afternoon, everyone,

Thank you all for joining us today as we celebrate Arbor Day—a day dedicated to the beauty, strength, and importance of trees in our lives and our community.

Trees are more than just a part of our landscape; they are a symbol of growth, resilience, and connection. They clean our air, provide shade, and offer a home to countless species. But beyond their physical presence, trees remind us of the roots that bind us together as a community and the branches that reach toward a brighter but shadier future.

Arbor Day has a long and meaningful history. It was first celebrated in 1872, thanks to the vision of J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska pioneer who recognized the need for trees on the open plains. He encouraged people to plant trees, not only for their beauty but for their practical benefits—providing windbreaks, fuel, shade, and building materials. That first Arbor Day resulted in the planting of over one million trees in Nebraska, and his movement quickly spread across the country and beyond. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated worldwide, reminding us of the powerful impact trees have on our environment and communities.

Here in Mayville, we are continuing that tradition by planting and caring for trees that will benefit generations to come. In fact, this is not the first time our village has embraced a large-scale tree planting initiative. In April of 1936, the Village of Mayville planted 150 Silver Maple Trees at Lakeside Park, each purchased for just $0.85. This investment in our community’s green spaces decades ago continues to remind us of the lasting benefits trees provide. As we work once again to plant trees within the Village, we recognize that while costs have risen, our commitment to preserving and enhancing Mayville’s natural beauty remains as strong as ever.

I especially want to recognize the Tree Committee, whose dedication and hard work have made this event possible. Their guidance has been invaluable in shaping our efforts to maintain and enhance the natural beauty of Mayville. From selecting the right trees to advising on planting techniques, their contributions ensure that our community’s green spaces thrive. Thank you for your tireless efforts in making Mayville a greener, healthier, and more vibrant place to live.

Let’s take this opportunity to reflect on the role we all play in preserving our planet and commit to making choices that honor the beauty of nature. Together, we can ensure that Mayville continues to flourish, rooted in the values of care and stewardship.
Thank you, and happy Arbor Day!
